Recently, we were tasked to spread support and awareness around the Austin community for local immigrants. My group and I planned to paint a mural on South Congress, but after being shut down by many local businesses we decided to move the mural into the hallways at our school. It took over a week to finalize our design as well as paint it on plywood to eventually be hung at Austin High School. On the mural, we included an outline of Texas to represent the local support aspect. Inside the outline, we painted the flags of countries that most immigrants in Austin travel from. Along with the flag-filled Texas, we added a monarch butterfly which symbolizes immigration. Lastly, we thoroughly painted the words "Deep in the heart of Texas." These words initially show the support of the Texas community as a whole for immigrants. Overall the Take Action action portion of the TGPLAN project is seen and recognized everyday in our communal high school. In hopes of spreading awareness our mural will acknowledge immigrants in the Austin community.
